This topic caught my attention since I have a cousin who has some reading difficulties and seems unmotivated and sometimes lazy at school. The matter is that his mom – my aunt – doesn’t recognize his condition and doesn’t take him to a psycho-pedagogue or similar. It’s terrible how this kid is being affected and doesn’t receive any effective help. By knowing all this information and everything we discussed in class, I’ll recommend my aunt to make him a test and find out exactly which kind of disorder he has since every dyslexic is different. He feels frustrated when reading and I think that he hasn’t found out what he is good at yet. I mean it´s possible that he would develop other skills and be good at other fields such as sports, drama or design. I’d like to share with all of you a video, it’s about some famous people who are dyslexic and have reached their goals as well. Some of the most important – at least for me - are: Albert Einstein, Walt Disney, John Lennon, among others. Here you have the link: http://youtu.be/ypEmolBThQc *Check it out! :)
Dyslexia is a very common disorder in our days, and we do not know why. I consider that we must be clear and able to recinize that type of disorder in our students because we do not know when we can find a dyslesic boy or girl in our classroom. Another aspect to evaluate can be: how do we help to students with this disability? It will not be our problem? because It is important to know that they are intelligent and able to understand about situations, jobs, emotions, etc but they have a dificulty to write, listen or read but they are like you or me.
Most of the time when kids have some sort of difficulty with reading and writing are immediately categorized as slow learners or even stupid/dumb, but people have to realize these kids may have a learning disability, Dyslexia. Dyslexia is ONE TYPE of learning disabilty affecting perception and processing in terms of words, numbers and symbols. As soon as kids start reading and/or writing, this kind of disorder can be identified, being the most common signs when perceiving words backwards, upside down or reversed. Dyslexia is probably the most common of the language based learning disabilities and definitely the most common cause of reading, writing and spelling difficulties.
Children with dyslexia have difficulties in phonemic awareness and phonics. Research has shown that dyslexia occurs due to subtle problems in information processing, especially in areas of the brain associated with language. For this reason, the reading does not become an automatic process but remains slow and difficult. When the child encounters difficulties in these first steps of reading comprehension is affected and is likely to lead to frustration.
The way our brain works is amazing. Every part of it is related to another one and when one of them fails, problems like Dyslexia may result. Sometimes we can think that dyslexic people will never be able to get success in their lives, but Bill Gates and Tom Cruise did it.
